Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma broke Virat Kohli’s eight-year-old record for the most number of sixes in a single season of the Indian Premier League by an Indian player. The 23-year-old set the record during his franchise’s match against Punjab Kings in match 69 of IPL 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

The left-handed batter surpassed Kohli’s milestone by hitting a six against pacer Rishi Dhawan in the sixth over of the SRH chase. Abhishek’s 39th six in the 17th season took him past Kohli’s tally of 38 sixes in 2016.
After Travis Head was dismissed on the first ball of the innings, Sharma took on the responsibility of scoring runs during the powerplay and quickly reached a fifty off just 21 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 66 off 28 balls, hitting six sixes and five fours while chasing a massive score of 215.
In his match-winning performance, Abhishek surpassed his previous best runs tally of 426, which he achieved in 2022. The SRH opener has now scored 467 runs from 13 innings, with an average of 38.91 and a strike rate of 209.41. He has hit 39 sixes and 35 fours.
