The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has kickstarted discussions with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises about the upcoming retention process. Opinions vary widely, with some franchises supporting retaining 5-7 players, while others pushing for up to 8 retentions. There are even suggestions for no retentions at all, according to a Cricbuzz report. During the IPL 2021 auction, franchises could retain a maximum of four players.
BCCI’s Policy:
In addition to the retention policy, the Board seeks input on the salary cap for the next three years. As the Board of Council for Cricket in India gears up for a mega auction later this year, they have engaged franchise CEOs to finalize the retention policy, which is expected to be decided by the end of this month.
Opinions on the franchise purse varied, with the current cap at ₹100 crore. An increase of ₹20 crore is a possibility for the next auction. The Cricbuzz report also mentioned that the Board plans to maintain the Impact Player rule for now.
In the 2021 auction, the Right To Match (RTM) cards were not used, and the Board is now gathering franchise views on this matter as well. Some key participants are currently unavailable, the meeting between the Board of Council for Cricket in India and franchise CEOs is expected to take place by the end of July 2024.
